Scientists this week unveiled an unprecedented look at our planet at night. A global composite image, constructed using cloud-free night images from a new NASA and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) satellite, shows the glow of natural and human-built phenomena across the planet in greater detail than ever before. NASA also released a slew of images from cities and communities around the world, using camera technology that produces an image by repeatedly scanning a scene and resolving it as millions of individual pixels. The instrument can capture images on nights with or without moonlight, producing crisp views of Earth's atmosphere, land and ocean surfaces. Since 15 years we organize an annual workshop UP-GIS dealing with Spatial planning using Geospatial technologies near the Vranovska prehrada (dam) in Southern Moravia. This year we open 2 main topics there: Borders and Water. Borders in general, but in focus to 22 year dead iron courtain on the border of former sowiet block. We will speak about plans and dreams from ninetieth, compare it with reality. The planning process requires some professionality, special techniques, but in general it depends on philosophical backgrounds, on steakholders who lead the society in the given period. Our seminars went through years solving both the techniques and implementation of advanced technologies into spatial planning as well as discussions about the ethic, economical, environmental, and even the deepest cultural roots of spatial planning, urbanism, fascination by technologies, completely new quality of infrastructures, historically unprecedent chances. And breaks in human heads. There is a remarkable progress, no discussion, year after year we analyse reasons, highlight good practice, and look for ways forward. To serve professionally, to produce pleasure in parallel to comfort, affluence, prosperity, sustainability. This year we would like to listen and discuss more with our neighbours and professional colleagues from abroad! The NSDI and INSPIRE Day is organized for the third time and will take place in Split, Republic of Croatia, September 14-16, 2011. It is encouraged by the great interest on the previous such events. We see the need for the promotion of the knowledge on spatial data infrastructure, at national and European level, the need to gather the representatives of the institutions, subjects of the NSDI with idea to speed up the implementation of SDI in Croatia and to develop the geo-enabled society. This time we want to enlight the activities on the transposition of the INSPIRE directive into the national legislative which as part of Programme of the Government of the Republic of Croatia for transposition and implementation of the EU acquis.
The Croatian Cartographic Society (CCS) and State Geodetic Administration (SGA) as components of the geodetic profession in the particular field have the task and aim of demonstrating knowledge and skill of solving problems related to NSDI and ensure a new area of work for its professionals.
The Croatian Cartographic Society by organizing the conference together with the State Geodetic Administration for the third time wants to contribute to the development of geoinformatics, cartography, geography and related fields. This time the emphasis is on spatial data infrastructure which will change understanding of character, importance and use of spatial data. BALGEOS contributed to the regional implementation of GGOS by developing national and regional capacities for coordinating, using and sharing geodetic data and information. The objectives of the proposal included an evaluation of the possibility to extend the EUREF Permanent Network (EPN) in Southeast Europe, testing the models for space geodetic observations processing, and integration of the obtained results from previous geodetic studies for the regions of Central and Southeast Europe in an unified frame. The project results contribute to the geodetic strategy for development of Earth observation systems in Southeast Europe.
The project consortium has made available its final report to AGISEE. This final report includes in particular a summary of the situation of the geodetic system in all countries of South-East Europe. The European project esdi-net+ has investigated the existence of spatial data infrastructures on sub-national level in Europe and evaluated those infrastructures. They are published in a public SDI Database that is now available online at
http://www.esdinetplus.eu/best_practice/database.html.
This database contains many entries of SDIs that are approved by the SDI owners and submitted by the national points of contacts in the required format. AGISEE members have published their SDIs as well; they are from Albania, Bulgaria, Macedonia and Turkey.
The database allows new SDIs to submit their data online. The Online Registration Form is available at http://www.esdinetplus.eu/best_practice/register.html. We encourage you to also submit your SDI into this database, which would give you many new contacts and others might contact you for future cooperation. The Vesta-GIS site is a training Course Catalogue, where the information about relevant courses and other training contents delivered by the network partners (course metadata, collected according with a standard template) are gathered and made available through an on-line searchable database. In particular, the VESTA-GIS course catalogue represents a chance for educational institutions to reuse quite specialized tailored courses, by making them visible to a pan-European GI-public. From a user perspective, seekers of vocational GI-education might find specialized offers that match their needs even better than expected.
